Waste Management
FORBI – Food Residue Biomass is the category of organic waste materials originating from the agri-food supply chain that can be repurposed or valorized for energy production, bio-based materials, soil amendment, animal feed, or other industrial uses. It is considered a sustainable and renewable resource, as it provides an alternative to fossil-based feedstocks while contributing to waste reduction and circular economy goals.
These residues include:
Crop residues (e.g., stalks, leaves, husks)
Food processing by-products (e.g., peels, pulp, shells, bones)
Retail and household food waste (e.g., expired or spoiled food, leftovers)
Slaughterhouse waste (e.g., blood, fat, organs)
Source: From agriculture, food industry, retail, and households
Composition: Rich in organic matter (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, fibers)
Potential uses:
Anaerobic digestion (biogas)
Composting (soil improver)
Biochar production
Feedstock for bio-based products
